I like doing both: running simulations and working in the lab. And because I trained in graphic design, I also care about how the results are presented.
A constant-current driver for a 450 nm laser diode. I worked out the circuit, simulated it in LTspice to check it, and then soldered it by hand on a perfboard.
With density functional theory (DFT) you can calculate what happens at a catalyst, even where experiments can't look.
Catalytic mechanisms of indium-oxide clusters for methanol synthesis

To turn CO2 back into methanol, you need a catalyst that can break up a very stable molecule. Indium oxide can do that, but the reaction is too fast and too small to observe directly, so you have to calculate it.
In my bachelor thesis I used DFT to calculate where CO2 and H2 bind on In2O3 clusters, which bonds break first and how much energy each reaction step needs.

Industry R&D
That's my next step: a six-month master's thesis in industry R&D, starting in spring 2027. Ideally something that combines simulation and hardware, for example measurement systems, sensors, electronics or medical devices.

I worked on abTEM, an open-source Python package that simulates electron microscopy images. My part was adding VASP as a source for the electrostatic potentials. I tested it on hBN, SrTiO3 and MoS2, three materials that scatter electrons quite differently.
